Bionics Repair

Send happy thoughts this week.
I had my malfunctioning spinal cord stimulator battery surgically replaced (for back pain.).
The surgery was excruciating,, but the new battery rocks!!.
The remote that controls the stimulation has malfuctioned.
The new controller arrived last week, but the co. tech has to reprogram it to decrease my pain next week.
The healing thoughts will be appreciated long after my appt.
Thanks

This is an illustrated slideshow about the sugery.

Anemic / Bionics on the fritz

I spent a wonderful time in Ky despite an unrealistic need for sleep and my spinal stimulator occasionally shocking me (the original shock almost caused me to pass out, the rest were more like a live wire touching my butt and leeft leg without warning).

I prevailed during my trip. Then returned to LA.

Five Technologies Set to Change The Decade

Five Technologies Set to Change The Decade

Amazing, new technologies will be woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Here are five.

In the coming decade, we will see some amazing new technologies that will affect our lives to such an extent that we will wonder how we ever lived without them.

As transistors continue to shrink, nanoscale devices will be built into more objects on the path toward ubiquitous computing and might even be integrated into fabric, yielding "smart clothing" that continuously monitors our health. If scientists manage to build quantum computers, they will take information processing to a whole new level. As the Internet becomes more widespread and mobile, the real world and virtual worlds will become increasingly intertwined. As pharmaceutical companies struggle with competition from generics, biotech drugs will define the decade. And better batteries will finally allow for practical electric cars, while flexible digital displays might replace our daily newspapers.

These are all exciting prospects. Here are five extensions and applications of these technologies that we feel have a good combination of scientific breakthrough and commercial potential.

Building-Integrated Photovoltaics

It's easy to tap into solar power if your construction materials--from roofing to siding to exterior facades--have built-in solar cells to create cost-efficient, aesthetically pleasing self-powered buildings. Building-integrated photovoltaics, or BIPV, is poised to change the face of construction, energy and urban planning in the coming decade.

High Fructose Intake May Increase Weight Gain From High Fat Diets

BETHESDA, Md. (Oct. 16, 2008) − Eating too much fructose can induce leptin resistance, a condition that can easily lead to becoming overweight when combined with a high-fat, high-calorie diet, according to a new study with rats. Although previous studies have shown that being leptin resistant can lead to rapid weight gain on a high-fat, high-calorie diet, this is the first study to show that leptin resistance can develop as a result of high fructose consumption.

Female-dominated Bonobos hunt and kill other monkeys

Unlike the male-dominated societies of their chimpanzee relatives, bonobo society—in which females enjoy a higher social status than males—has a "make-love-not-war" kind of image. While chimpanzee males frequently band together to hunt and kill monkeys, the more peaceful bonobos were believed to restrict what meat they do eat to forest antelopes, squirrels, and rodents. Not so, according to a study, reported in the October 14th issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, that offers the first direct evidence of wild bonobos hunting and eating the young of other primate species.

Americans and the Economy: Angry Feelings and Fear Exceed the Terrorism Risk

In the first three days of the country's economic meltdown that began Sept. 29, 81 percent of Americans surveyed in a national poll agreed or strongly agreed that the financial crisis "poses a greater threat to the quality of my life than does the threat of terrorism." And researchers found little trust in the government and even less in business leaders. On a personal level, 41percent of the 802 respondents were very angry about the current financial challenges and 32 percent were moderately angry. Respondents were similarly fearful, worried, and sad.

Supercritical Fluids

in

I just read a Discover Magazine article in which they talked about a very interesting discovery: supercritical fluids. This state of matter has been theorized, but in August, the first known instance of it was observed and measured in a hydrothermal vent deep in the ocean.

In general, as heat increases, matter is more likely to be a gas. As pressure increases, it is more likely to be a fluid, and then a solid. In this instance, with the pressure of an ocean depth of nearly 10,000 feet, the magma-heated water, at 876 degrees F, acts as both a gas and a liquid.

I believe that when I die...
