Bionics Repair

Send happy thoughts this week.
I had my malfunctioning spinal cord stimulator battery surgically replaced (for back pain.).
The surgery was excruciating,, but the new battery rocks!!.
The remote that controls the stimulation has malfuctioned.
The new controller arrived last week, but the co. tech has to reprogram it to decrease my pain next week.
The healing thoughts will be appreciated long after my appt.
Thanks

This is an illustrated slideshow about the sugery.

Anemic / Bionics on the fritz

I spent a wonderful time in Ky despite an unrealistic need for sleep and my spinal stimulator occasionally shocking me (the original shock almost caused me to pass out, the rest were more like a live wire touching my butt and leeft leg without warning).

I prevailed during my trip. Then returned to LA.

Five Technologies Set to Change The Decade

Five Technologies Set to Change The Decade

Amazing, new technologies will be woven into the fabric of our daily lives. Here are five.

In the coming decade, we will see some amazing new technologies that will affect our lives to such an extent that we will wonder how we ever lived without them.

As transistors continue to shrink, nanoscale devices will be built into more objects on the path toward ubiquitous computing and might even be integrated into fabric, yielding "smart clothing" that continuously monitors our health. If scientists manage to build quantum computers, they will take information processing to a whole new level. As the Internet becomes more widespread and mobile, the real world and virtual worlds will become increasingly intertwined. As pharmaceutical companies struggle with competition from generics, biotech drugs will define the decade. And better batteries will finally allow for practical electric cars, while flexible digital displays might replace our daily newspapers.

These are all exciting prospects. Here are five extensions and applications of these technologies that we feel have a good combination of scientific breakthrough and commercial potential.

Building-Integrated Photovoltaics

It's easy to tap into solar power if your construction materials--from roofing to siding to exterior facades--have built-in solar cells to create cost-efficient, aesthetically pleasing self-powered buildings. Building-integrated photovoltaics, or BIPV, is poised to change the face of construction, energy and urban planning in the coming decade.

My Fast Diet

Excerpt: "This is the third day of my fast-diet, and I feel more energetic now than I did when I was eating a lot."

My original purpose in doing this fast-diet was as a physical cleansing and for spiritual balance. I was just going to do this for one or two days, and only keep going if I was fairly comfortable with it. When I realized that I was feeling healthier in body, mind, and spirit, I decided to keep going. Realizing that I was losing weight was a nice benefit as well. Yes, it is a struggle at times, but it's well worth it. Even though I didn't start out doing this for the weight loss, I'm going to post my weight for each day because I know that weight loss is a big motivating factor for a lot of people.

I started at about 1:30am Monday night / Tuesday morning of Oct 14th, just before bed. All day Tuesday and Wednesday, the only things I ate were fresh fruits: bananas, grapes, oranges, peaches, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, and blueberries, most of which were from fresh fruit mixes we got from the local grocery store deli area. For dinner, I had a bowl of corn and stewed tomatoes (both from a can) with a little salt on them. Yes, corn and tomatoes are fruits. I ate about 900 to 1000 calories of fruit per day. For me, this is a pretty extreme fast, because I'm a fairly athletic person, so I usually consume about 2500 to 3000 calories per day while maintaining a steady weight.

For the first few days, the only things I drank during this fast were water and fresh-brewed green tea mixed with some other teas and a touch of honey. There are almost no calories in this drink. I took an All Day Energy vitamin each morning. This vitamin contains caffeine equivalent to a cup of coffee, time released. Every day, I'm having some caffeine, exercising, meditating, reading, and working (my work mostly consists of programming and writing for my website).

High Fructose Intake May Increase Weight Gain From High Fat Diets

BETHESDA, Md. (Oct. 16, 2008) − Eating too much fructose can induce leptin resistance, a condition that can easily lead to becoming overweight when combined with a high-fat, high-calorie diet, according to a new study with rats. Although previous studies have shown that being leptin resistant can lead to rapid weight gain on a high-fat, high-calorie diet, this is the first study to show that leptin resistance can develop as a result of high fructose consumption.

Study shows that reading can help obese kids lose weight

It's no secret that reading is beneficial. But can it help kids lose weight? In the first study to look at the impact of literature on obese adolescents, researchers at Duke Children's Hospital discovered that reading the right type of novel may make a difference. The Duke researchers asked obese females ages 9 to 13 who were already in a comprehensive weight loss program to read an age-appropriate novel called Lake Rescue (Beacon Street Press).

New cells identified that create fat cells

To understand where fat comes from, you have to start with a skinny mouse. By using such a creature, and observing the growth of fat after injections of different kinds of immature cells, scientists at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Rockefeller University have discovered an important fat precursor cell that may in time explain how changes in the numbers of fat cells might increase and lead to obesity.

New study proves that pain is not a symptom of arthritis. Pain causes arthritis.

Summary: This study clearly shows that pain itself is the cause of arthritis. Pain causes inflamation which spreads to the central nervous system. From there, it spreads to the joints, causing more pain and inflamation, and a feedback loop. By blocking pain signals, arthritis spread can be prevented and even reversed. It is likely that any methods that successfully block the pain successfully prevent and reverse arthritis, including medications and natural methods. Here's the article:
