If an elderly but distinguished scientist says that something is possible, he is almost certainly right; but if he says that it is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
- Arthur C. Clarke
Great idea, Becca! I love the quotes you posted!
And the one you posted, Ras, has always been one of my favorites.
Here are some of my favorites:
"Be the Change that you wish to see in the world."
— Mahatma Gandhi
"The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do."
— Jack Kerouac
...and the longer version of that quote:
"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify them, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do."
— Jack Kerouac
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."
— Dr. Seuss
"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."
— Dr. Seuss
"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. "
— Mahatma Gandhi
"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
— Albert Einstein
Becca and BentMonk inspired me to add a quote of my own. It's more of a motto and a way of life, but I've said it often enough:
"Why choose when you can have it all?"
-- Jay Miller
Awesome additions to the quotes list!
"The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that our aim is too low and we reach it" -- Michelangelo
"Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children."
-Kahlil Gibran
"Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda
"For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk."
- Stephen Hawking
"All you need is Love." - The Beatles
"Don't think you can. Know you can." - Morpheus
"It's not a war on drugs. It's a war on personal freedom. Keep that in mind at all times."
- Frank Zappa
"Maybe it's not too late to learn how to love, and forget how to hate." - Ozzy
"Mastery of others is strength. Mastery of self is true power." - Lao Tzu
"Love thy neighbor as thy self." - Jesus
"Be like water." - Bruce Lee
"The key to immortality is leading a life worthy of remembrance." - Buddhist Saying
"The only limits you have are the ones you set." - Senior Master John Price
"There are three great secrets to success in the martial arts; practice, practice, practice."
- Grandmaster Sin Kwang The'
"One more set." - Dave Randolph
"What's the opposite of Christopher Reeve? Christopher Walken." - Christopher Reeve
"Stupid people exist so that smart people can recognize each other." - Paul Graber
Awesome quotes, BentMonk! Several of those are quotes I've used on more than one occassion (the ones from Yoda, Morpheus, The Beatles, Jesus), and I recognize the others. I love how you pulled wisdom from a wide variety of sources here. I like your original quote, too; very much like the little jokes Becca and I sometimes make in private
"One more set." I can feel the burn already. Good times!
This may be a bit OT, but these three songs inspire me on a regular basis.
parabol •
So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
This one, this form I hold now.
Embracing you, this reality here,
This one, this form I hold now, so
Wide eyed and hopeful.
Wide eyed and hopefully wild.
We barely remember what came before this precious moment,
Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This body holding me, reminding me that I am not alone in
This body makes me feel eternal. All this pain is an illusion.
parabola •
We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside
This holy reality, this holy experience.
Choosing to be here in
This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.
Alive, I
In this holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in
This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal
All this pain is an illusion.
Twirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this chance to be alive and breathing.
This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember. We are eternal.
All this pain is an illusion.
right in two •
Angels on the sideline,
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.
Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly monkeys
Where there's one you're bound to divide it right in two.
Angels on the sideline,
Baffled and confused.
Father blessed them all with reason,
And this is what they choose?
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys.
Give them thumbs, they forge a blade,
And where there's one they're bound to divide it right in two.
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground.
Silly monkeys.
Give them thumbs, they make a club to beat their brother down.
How they've survived so misguided is a mystery.
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.
Gotta divide it all right in two.
Fight till they die over sun, over sky,
They fight till they die over sea, over air,
They fight till they die over blood, over love,
They fight till they die over words, polarizing.
Angels on the sideline again,
Benched along with patience and reason.
Angels on the sideline again,
Wondering where this tug of war will end.
Gotta divide it all right in two.
Parabola: "Embrace this moment. Remember. We are eternal.
All this pain is an illusion."
There is so much knowledge I wish I could just imbue into people. One of the many projects I've been working on for a while now is an article called, "We Are Eternal." I'll post it on Life Chat at some point.
I love it when people realize that we are eternal, whether they only realize it for a moment or they realize it deeply, for all time. It releases fear and pain and helps joy grow in their place. When we truly realize that we are eternal, there is no reason to fear, and it is much easier to ignore and/or overcome the pains of this momentary life.
"Right in Two" points out something I was literally just thinking about again yesterday, which is that people focus a lot on the illusion of limitations. I'm thankful that more and more people in our world are realizing that all is infinite. Yes, when people fight over what they perceive as limited resources, they prove themselves right all the time, because they create a very convincing illusion for themselves the more they focus on their limitations.
The more that we realize that all is infinite, the more we find proof of it everywhere we look, and abundance naturally flows to us with greater and greater ease.
I was given a ticket to see Tool for Father's Day year before last. One of the most fantastic live shows I have ever seen.
If more people could realize that we are all connected at the molecular level, and that each of our actions causes endless ripples within and beyond that connectivity both positive and negative, we might start paying more attention to all the stupid things we do to each other and the world we live in.
