Last night, in the middle of the night, during one of my deep-sleep cycles, I awoke just enough to see a black shape hovering over my chest. It could have been on my chest, but I say hovering because I felt no sensation of it physically contacting me. It was fairly dark in the room, with some light coming in from the window and my open bedroom door. I was still partially asleep, but I immediately realized this was something that shouldn't be there. It was completely black, and obscuring more than a third (maybe half) of my field of view. It filled the central area of the lower and middle thirds of my field of view. It had a vaguely humanoid shape, like seeing a black misty torso and head.
I was laying on my back, with my arms over my head on my pillow. The instant I saw this shape, I swung my arms out in front of me, to get it away. It vanished as my arms approached it, or as they hit the space where it was, ie within less than a second from the time my eyes opened. My arms didn't contact anything but air. At that exact same moment, the gallon-sized water jug on my desk, with about two cups of water in it, flew/fell off of my desk and landed on the floor with a hollow thump. From my position on the bed, the water jug was initially about four feet from me, a little over a foot out of arm's reach. It landed on the floor just a few inches from the edge of the desk.
I sat up and looked around the room. I saw the water jug on the floor. The cat who was sleeping at my feet on the bed was now running from that spot to the door, in a crouched down position. Still crouched, she turned her head and looked at me just before she reached the doorway. Then she stopped, seeing me sitting up and looking at her. The cat who was sleeping on the desk, about two feet from the water jug, was still in the exact same sleeping position she was in when I went to sleep, except that now her head was raised so she could see what I was doing. Neither of the cats could have possibly reached the water jug's spot on the desk and returned to their current locations in the one to two seconds it took me to sit up and look around. Everything else looked completely normal in the room. I'm pretty confident about dealing with these kinds of things now, so I went back to sleep.
